Email Scams

The latest 'emergency funds' scam email claims the sender is stuck in Lugansk (Ukraine) having had their bag and passport stolen. It asks for money to pay for a flight home and settle the hotel bill which the sender claims they cannot get from their bank in time to catch the flight home.
Another scam email circulating, titled 'Tax Refund Notification', states the recipient is owed a tax rebate of over £300 from HMRC. The email has a form attached which asks for lots of personal details including bank details and PIN number.
A spam email has been sent out to a number of email addresses informing recipients about a cancer diagnosis. NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) is advising people who have received this email to delete it without opening it and not to click on any links. The email, the subject line of which is important blood analysis result, claims the recipient may have cancer. This malicious email is not from NICE. NICE are investigating the origins of this email and have reported it to the police. Please visit www.nice.org.uk for further details.

Internet Scams

Trading Standards is warning of scam websites purporting to sell concert tickets. The websites often look official and contain the name of the artist in the domain name. The websites either promise tickets which never arrive or promise to refund money for tickets that are no longer available. Again the refund never arrives. To report fraud and internet crime contact Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk.

Telephone Scams

Trading Standards are warning of a telemarketer with a 0161 Manchester phone number, calling older people in the Hyndburn area, and trying to sell electrical devices of some kind, costing £126. They request personal information about consumers and appear to know who they bank with. They go on to say that they are offering a discount to pensioners and ask for bank card details.
Trading Standards Advice is never deal with cold callers.

Doorstep Callers

There have been reports of doorstep fish sellers calling on vulnerable people and pressuring them into buying large quantities of fish. In one incident an elderly lady paid over £326 for a box of fish. Several complainants said they have had to throw the fish away as it tasted odd. Trading Standards advice is never buy this type of product from door-to-door sellers who are not regular rounds men. You may not get the weight, quality or hygiene standards you are expecting.

Casual Vacancy

Bolton le Sands Parish Council (south ward) has one vacancy which must be filled by co-option.  Anyone interested in joining the Parish Council should write to: The Clerk to the Council, No. 2 The Shore, Bolton-le-Sands, LA5 8JR not later than Monday March 31 2014 notifying of their interest.

You must be a British, Commonwealth or Irish Citizen or a citizen of another European Union Member of State, be 18 years of age, and not be disqualified,  They should be a registered local government elector for the parish or this is where their principal or only place of work is.

Music Festival

Well done to all the children from years 2 and 5 who recently performed in the Music Festival at the Ashton Hall in Lancaster.  The children really seemed to enjoy themselves and the response from parents was very positive.

Virtual Balloon Race

Bolton-le-Sands Primary School recently promoted the St John’s Hospice Virtual Balloon race and sold 300 balloons raising over £1000 for the Hospice.

Piano Appeal

The former Priest in Charge at Holy Trinity, Rev Gerwyn Capon, has been appointed as the new Dean of Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff. 

Ladies of Note

The Ladies of Note are holding a concert in aid of playground funds on Saturday March 22, and the United Reformed Church has kindly offered to host the evening; a programme to suit all ages, featuring songs from the shows, folk music, pop hits and more.  This musical night of entertainment will start at 7pm and refreshments will be provided.  Tickets cost £5 and are available from the playground committee, the Ladies of Note and the United Reformed Church.

Community Playground Project

The Community Playground Project coffee morning raised £295 for playground funds.  Thank you to all who supported it.  The project has received further generous community donations from:  Bolton-le-Sands Primary School FOBLES who donated the proceeds from their last mufti day, M. Archer & Son, St Mary of the Angels 100 Club, The Bonfire Committee, and village residents.  The Community Playground Project is grateful to the Bowling Club and Sheila Rigby for nominating  the  Playground Project as the recipient of funds raised at the annual Mike Rigby Trophy to be held on Sunday April 13 at Bolton-le-Sands Bowling Club. 

Through a lot of hard work, commitment and support the committee is very close to their target.  This is a final fundraising push to achieve their target and ensure the playground achieves its full potential.  Please support any upcoming events that you can.  Thank you again to all who have supported, and continue to support, this eagerly anticipated project. 

Coffee Morning
