Bogus Traders

A company is currently cold calling older residents and selling £10,000 boxes to attach into their central heating systems, with promises of a reduction in heating bills. Savings are not guaranteed, and any obtained are unlikely to amount to the cost of the gadget.

The recent bad weather and high winds have bought out bogus workmen cold-calling householders with offers to repair roofs, fences, guttering and remove trees damaged by gusts. Rogue traders will prey on vulnerable householders' concerns about the condition of their property and often undertake work that is not needed, of poor quality and vastly overpriced.  If consumers think work needs to be done as a result of storm damage, they are advised to first check with their insurance company. If you do need to find a trader to do work, get quotes from two or three local businesses or ask friends and relatives to recommend a reputable business. You can also use the Safe Trader Scheme.

Elderly Targeted By Fake Police Officers

There has been a recent series of incidents whereby fraudsters either phone or attend the home address of elderly members of the public, claiming to be police officers.
The fake officer/s will claim that they are investigating a fraud which they believe the elderly person to be a victim of. The fake officer/s will then request the bank cards and personal identification numbers (PIN) of the victim and claim these are needed for investigation purposes. If the first contact was made by a phone call, the fake officer/s will tell the victim that someone will be over to collect the evidence. In one case the victim was instructed to attend their local bank and withdraw all of the money from their account. The suspect was left alone in the victim’s house whilst the victim carried out the instructions.

Protect Yourself
  • Before letting anyone into your home who claims to be from any law enforcement agency, ask to see their identity card and check it by calling 101.
  • Ask if they can attend at a pre-arranged time when a family member or friend can also be present.
  • If you receive a phone call from a police officer,  ask for their name and force and tell them you will call them back. Wait a few minutes and then use 101 to call them back through their force’s switchboard and verify their identity.
  • The Police will never ask for your PIN or passwords. Do not give this information to anyone.
  • The Police will never request that you withdraw/transfer any money to them.

Morecambe Bay Partnership is running a special public talk exploring and rediscovering Morecambe Bay’s forgotten salt industry in October.

Andrew Fielding, an expert in salt-making, will be exploring the tradition and forgotten industry of salt production. Participants will discover more about the techniques used in the salt-making process and how the industry developed and disappeared over time in Morecambe Bay.

Susannah Bleakley, Director of Morecambe Bay Partnership said: “Morecambe Bay has a long history of salt-making which forms part of its industrial heritage. This is a rare opportunity to discover much more about this unique and fascinating process from one of the UK’s leading experts in the field.”

Flooding and coastal erosion can have devastating impacts and it's important that you are prepared.  Over 5.5 million, or one in six, properties are at risk of flooding from all types of floods across England and Wales. So rather than leave things to chance, if you think you may be at risk it is important to plan ahead and minimise any potential disruption caused by flooding.   Practical advice on what to do to protect yourself, your property and your community before, during and after a flood can be found in a free leaflet 'Be Flood Ready' available at Bolton-le-Sands Library.

Door-to-door fish sellers

Trading Standards is still getting reports of door-to-door fish sellers pressuring residents into buying very large quantities of expensive fish. One householder paid £350 for a box of fish and another was charged £45 for a packet of fish. In both cases the fish did not look fresh and there were concerns it was not as described.  Consumers are advised to buy this type of product from local market traders, fishmongers and pre-arranged roundsmen, who have regular customers in the area and are easy to contact if things go wrong.

Rogue Traders -Roofing

There have been a number of bogus traders offering home repairs and maintenance this month, roofing seems to be a particular favourite.  Trading Standards advice is never do business with doorstep traders. School News

The children have now broken up for the half-term holiday and will return to school on Monday 23 February.  Meanwhile two teams were sent to a Tag Rugby tournament that was held at Heysham High School this week. Both sides (BLS Blue and BLS Yellow) played really well and were a credit to the school.  In the end the BLS Blues (the 'Dragons') won the tournament and brought a super trophy back to school to add to their collection.  Well done the Blues!

Bolton-le-Sands Primary School

A big 'well done' to the school's football team who qualified to play at the Globe Arena during Morecambe's match against Tranmere Rovers in front of 2500 spectators last Saturday. At half-time the team played some lovely football in very difficult conditions and were really unlucky to lose 1-0 to Lancaster Road following a penalty.
